Purpose

A unique agreement between The George Washington University and Oxford University in England began in 1990: The J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Scholarships at Oxford University. These scholarships are funded by an endowment from the J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Charitable Trust. The scholarships are awarded to George Washington students or recent graduates for post-graduate degree study at Oxford University in Oxford, England.

The Oxford area, only an hour from London, is rich in cultural opportunities. Oxford has the world's oldest museum, the Ashmolean, with its famed collection of archaeological antiquities, and the Bodleian Library, a resource for scholars from all over the world. Nearby are Stratford-on-Avon and such Cotswold towns as Burton-on-the-Water and Lower Slaughter.

Eligibility

Each year that the Scholarship is open, the George Washington University will select a Shapiro Scholar from among those endorsed by GW to apply for the Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell scholarships.  Selection criteria include academic transcripts, personal essays, interviews and letters of recommendation. Consideration will also be given to the plan of study at Oxford as well as the recommendations from the Rhodes and Marshall Nomination Committees. The principal criterion for selection, however, will be academic merit or promise.

Period of Study

The program, modeled after the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships, will give a George Washington University graduating senior or recent graduate the opportunity to study for one year at Oxford University, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious universities.

Special Considerations

Only students who were endorsed by GW to apply for the Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell scholarships are eligible for this award.

Award

Each year, all nominees for the Shapiro Scholarship must be accepted for study at an Oxford degree program and for placement at an Oxford College. The student selected for the program will enter graduate degree or second baccalaureate studies at one of the colleges designated each year by GW. If you would like to know more about studying in the U.K., visit the British Embassy's Education Site.
