Marshall Scholarships enable young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study for two years either at graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.
The scheme allows the Scholars, who are the potential leaders, opinion-formers and decision-makers in their own country, to gain an understanding and appreciation of British values and the British way of life. It also establishes long-lasting ties between the peoples of Britain and the United States. In appointing Scholars the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced by their scholastic attainments and by their leadership and ambassadorial potential.
Eligibility
Applicants must have graduated from their undergraduate college or university after April 2020. Competition is open to those with an undergraduate degree from an accredited four year U.S. college or university with the following credentials: a minimum GPA of 3.7 (and higher GPAs are strongly recommended) and the ambition and ability to contribute substantially to knowledge in an academic discipline.
Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, and for candidates who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society.
In order to apply for the Rhodes, Marshall and Mitchell scholarships, students must obtain an institutional endorsement from GW. Because these competitions have many elements in common, GW conducts a single endorsement process for all three. If you would like to learn more about these prestigious scholarship programs, and about the GW endorsement process, please contact us at fellcent@gwu.edu.
Period of Study
One or two academic years; may be extended in some cases for a third year.
Special Considerations
Scholarships are available for tenure at any university in the U.K. (other preferences or choices are not guaranteed). Proposed plans must be for two years. If the degree proposed is a one-year program it will be necessary for the applicant to consider what course of study might be undertaken in the second year. This could be a year supervised non-degree research or perhaps another one-year degree either at the same institution or at a different UK university.
Award
The award includes university fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.
Please note: All GW Marshall candidates are also eligible to be considered for the George Washington University J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Scholarship to the University of Oxford.
