Connect to Tutoring and Other Academic Resources

Academic Commons is using a new app to make it even easier for students to access peer tutoring programs and statistical consulting, as well as student success coaching through the Office for Student Success. You can use this app, Penji,  to access different "communities" on campus, allowing you to schedule appointments, attend drop-in hours or group sessions, and more.

Access Penji*

*Penji is also available via our mobile app (iOS and Android). The same features are available online and on the mobile app.

  • Use your GW NetID and associated password to log-in.
  • You'll be let into your "School" within Penji, where you'll find all "communities" hosted within Penji.
  • Each community has a unique set of resources, falling under the umbrellas of Appointments, Drop-in, or Sections (groups).

Use the following steps to get connected to academic support resources:

  1. Navigate to the Penji homepage using a web browser or the mobile app (iOS and Android).
  2. Click "Get Started."
  3. Type in your GW email address using the format "NetID@gwu.edu." Do not include "gwmail."
  4. Once you have read through the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, check the box and click "Next."
  5. Complete the GW Two-Step Authentication process you usually use to access your email. Review the GW Information Technology's guide for setting up Two-Step Authentication for assistance.

If you have any issues logging in (or anything else within the app), please email academiccommons@gwu.edu or studentsuccess@gwu.edu

Home Screen

Once you've logged in, you'll find a screen that lists some support options. The top title in the blue field corresponds to the "community" you are viewing. The options on this screen are this community's support options. Different options will be offered among the various communities. Please note that this app does not currently reflect all student support available on campus - but we're working on it!

Community-Specific Information

Tutoring and Review Sessions

In this community, students can access tutoring appointments and course review sessions. These sessions are led by upper-level students that have been hired in consultation with the faculty, have demonstrated excellence in their previous coursework, and participate in extensive training.

Appointments

Appointments are 1-on-1 interactions scheduled between yourself and a "provider" (ex: tutor, learning assistant, review leader, success coach, etc…).

  1. Tap "Schedule an appointment" on the home screen (for Tutoring and Review Sessions, you can choose between a 30 and 60 minute appointment).
  2. Select a course.
  3. Pick a time - times from all providers for the selected course are shown.
    • NOTE: You can't currently filter these times to a specific provider, although that feature is coming soon. To find a provider, you'll have to pick a time and see if your desired provider is available on the next screen.
  4. Pick a tutor - multiple providers will be shown if available for that time and course. Tap each to see their detailed profile and select one to move forward.
    • NOTE: You can chat with providers at this step if you want to ask them questions first. Please note that tutors are also students and may not be able to respond immediately.
  5. Pick a location - the locations displayed depend on what location availability the provider has set for that given time period. A different time/provider may have different location options available.
  6. Topic - follow the instructions for entering this data.
  7. Confirm the session request.
  8. Meet the tutor at the time and location listed in Session Details.

Review Sessions

Review sessions are offered to provide support for select courses. Review sessions may be offered by a Learning Assistant, Review Leader, or another type of position. To guarantee your spot and receive the relevant information, you can RSVP to the session. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the class and click "Next."
  2. Choose the available "Section" then click "Join."
  3. You will be redirected to your home screen and will see the "Section" at the bottom of the page.
  4. If you click on the new "Section," you will find all relevant information including date, time, and location.

OSS/Coaching

The Student Success Coaching Program is an academic support service provided to all actively enrolled undergraduates and is uniquely designed to help students build the needed foundation for a successful semester and academic year.

Through collaborative 1:1 sessions, students learn to develop learning strategies, establish healthy study habits, cultivate self-advocacy, build a campus support system, and so much more. It is important to note that success coaching is not academic advising, personal counseling, or one-on-one tutoring for a particular course.

  1. Tap "Schedule a weekly 60 min appointment" on the home screen.
  2. Select a coach from the drop-down. Please note that some coaches may not have availability.
  3. Confirm the coach and tap “Next”.
  4. Select an open time and confirm by tapping “Select”.
  5. Confirm the coach that you would like to meet with and tap “Next”.
  6. Choose if you would like to meet in-person at Tompkins, the University Student Center, or virtually. Please note that some of our coaches are only available virtually.
